Under direct Crown rule, Lord Canning's government suppressed the remaining centres of the 1857 revolt — Tatya Tope was hanged in April and peace was proclaimed on 8 July — while Bengal's ryots launched the Indigo Revolt against forced cultivation. James Wilson arrived as the first Finance Member to rebuild colonial finances.
