In the wake of the Revolt of 1857, the Government of India Act 1858 ended East India Company rule and transferred the government of India to the British Crown. Queen Victoria's Proclamation promised religious non-interference, respect for princely treaties and limited amnesty, while the rebellion was suppressed and the last Mughal emperor exiled.
