Population: Distribution, Density, Growth and Composition

How India's 1,210 million people (2011) are spatially distributed, how densely packed they are, how their numbers have grown over a century, and how they are socially composed by residence, language, religion and occupation.

India's Population & the Census as Data Source

India is the second most populous country after China with 1,210 million people (2011 Census) — more than North America, South America and Australia combined. Such a large base is often linked to pressure on limited resources and socio-economic problems. The sole comprehensive source of this data is the decennial Census.

  • Census held every 10 years (decennial); a Union subject conducted by the Registrar General & Census Commissioner under MHA.
  • First Census: 1872 (under Lord Mayo) — non-synchronous; first complete/synchronous Census: 1881 (under Lord Ripon).
  • Census Act, 1948 is the legal backbone of the operation.

Distribution: A Highly Uneven Pattern

Population is spread very unevenly. Uttar Pradesh has the largest population, followed by Maharashtra, Bihar and West Bengal; ten states together hold about 76% of India's people. Distribution reflects physical, socio-economic and historical factors acting together.

  • Physical factors: climate, terrain and water — hence dense North Indian Plains, deltas and coastal plains; sparse Himalayas, NE and western interiors.
  • Socio-economic/historical: settled agriculture, settlement history, transport, industrialisation, urbanisation.
  • Modifiers: irrigation (Rajasthan), minerals/energy (Jharkhand), transport (Peninsular states) raised once-sparse zones.
  • Low shares despite large area: J&K (1.04%), Uttarakhand (0.84%), Arunachal Pradesh (0.11%).

Density: Crude, Physiological and Agricultural

Density = persons per unit area; India's 2011 density is 382/sq km, up from 117 in 1951 — a rise of over 200 in fifty years. It ranges from just 17/sq km in Arunachal Pradesh to 11,297/sq km in NCT Delhi. Because crude density poorly captures pressure on farmland, two refined measures are used.

  • Physiological density = total population / net cultivated area.
  • Agricultural density = total agricultural population / net cultivable area.
  • Agricultural population = cultivators + agricultural labourers + their families.
  • High state densities: Bihar 1102, WB 1029, UP 828 (north); Kerala 859, TN 555 (peninsular).

Growth & the Four Phases

Growth is the change in numbers between two time points, expressed as a percentage; the annual growth rate is 1.64% (2011). It has a natural component (crude birth and death rates) and an induced component (migration); the chapter discusses only natural growth. Over a century, India passed through four distinct phases.

  • Phase I (1901-1921): Stagnant/stationary — high birth AND death rates; negative growth in 1911-21 (poor health, illiteracy, weak food distribution).
  • Phase II (1921-1951): Steady growth — mortality fell with better health/sanitation/transport; birth rate stayed high (despite Depression & WWII).
  • Phase III (1951-1981): Population explosion — sharp mortality fall + high fertility; avg annual growth ~2.2%; aided by planning and in-migration.
  • Phase IV (post-1981): High but decelerating — falling birth rate via higher mean age at marriage and female education.

Regional Variation, Adolescents & Youth Policy

Growth varies widely across space: southern states (Kerala, Karnataka, TN, AP, Odisha, Goa) grew under 20% in 1991-2001, with Kerala lowest at 9.4%, while a north-western to eastern belt grew 20-25%. In 2001-2011 almost all states slowed (Maharashtra fell most, 6.7 pp; AP least, 3.5 pp). Adolescents (10-19 yrs) are 20.9% (2011) — a high-potential but vulnerable group, prompting dedicated youth policy.

  • Adolescents: male 52.7%, female 47.3%; risks include early marriage, female illiteracy, dropouts, malnutrition, HIV/AIDS.
  • National Youth Policy (NYP-2014, Feb 2014): defines 'youth' as 15-29 years.
  • National Policy for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, 2015: umbrella framework linking skilling to demand.

Population Composition: Rural-Urban

By residence, India is still largely rural — 68.8% live in villages (2011) — but the urban share (31.16%) is growing faster due to economic development and better health/hygiene driving rural-urban migration. Rural distribution and village size vary sharply across the country.

  • 640,867 villages (Census 2011); 597,608 (93.2%) inhabited.
  • High rural %: Himachal Pradesh, Bihar; barely half rural: Goa, Mizoram.
  • UTs mostly low rural share except Dadra & Nagar Haveli (53.38%).
  • Village size: under 200 persons in NE hills/W. Rajasthan/Rann of Kachchh; up to ~17,000 in Kerala and parts of Maharashtra.

Traps to avoid

  • First Census (1872, Lord Mayo) is NOT the first complete/synchronous Census (1881, Lord Ripon) — both years are tested.
  • Physiological vs Agricultural density: different denominators (net cultivated vs net cultivable) AND agricultural density uses agricultural population, not total population.
  • The Great Divide is 1921, and the negative-growth decade is 1911-1921 — not 1901 or 1901-1911.
  • Lowest growth (Kerala 9.4%) does not mean low density — Kerala's density is a high 859/sq km.
  • Adolescents = 10-19 years (20.9%) but NYP-2014 'youth' = 15-29 years — distinct age bands.
  • Highest-population state (UP) is NOT the highest-density unit (Delhi overall; Bihar 1102 among major states) — distribution and density differ.
