Why Transport and Communication are Lifelines
Goods and services do not move from supply locales to demand locales on their own, so efficient transport is a prerequisite for fast development. Transport works only with an equally developed communication system, making transport, communication and trade complementary to one another. Movement happens over three domains, land, water and air, giving land, water and air transport. A dense, efficient network underpins local, national and global trade.

Roadways and their Classification
India has the world's second-largest road network at about 62.16 lakh km (2020-21), and roadways actually preceded railways here. Roads are cheaper to build than rail, can cross dissected and undulating terrain and steep gradients like the Himalayas, are economical for short distances, give door-to-door service, and act as feeders to rail, sea and air. By capacity, roads fall into six classes.
- GQ Super Highways: six-lane Delhi-Mumbai-Chennai-Kolkata, by NHAI; N-S and E-W corridors added
- National, State, District and Other (rural) roads in descending order; rural roads under PMGSY
- Border Roads Organisation (set up 1960, under Defence) builds strategic border roads
- Metalled (cement/concrete/bitumen) are all-weather; unmetalled fail in rains
Railways: Principal Mode and Integrating Force
Railways are the principal mode for freight and passengers and have been a great integrating force for over 150 years, binding the economic life of the country. The first train ran from Mumbai to Thane in 1853 over 34 km, and Indian Railways is the largest public sector undertaking. Its spread was shaped by physiographic, economic and administrative factors, favouring the level northern plains and avoiding deserts, swamps and high relief. The Konkan Railway later opened up the west coast.

Pipelines: The New Arrival
Pipelines are a recent addition, now carrying crude oil, petroleum products and natural gas from fields to refineries, fertilizer plants and thermal power stations; even solids move as slurry. Initial laying cost is high but running cost is minimal, and pipelines rule out trans-shipment losses and delays, which is why inland refineries like Barauni, Mathura and Panipat became viable. India has three major pipeline networks.

Waterways and Inland Navigation
Waterways are the cheapest, most fuel-efficient and environment-friendly mode, ideal for heavy and bulky goods, and India has about 14,500 km of navigable inland waterways. Under the National Waterways Act, 2016, 111 inland waterways (including 5 declared earlier) were notified as National Waterways, developed through the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). The five oldest are the most important.

Major Sea Ports and Foreign Trade
With a coastline of 11,098.81 km, India has 12 major and about 200 non-major ports, and the major ports handle 95% of foreign trade; some 95% of trade volume (68% by value) moves by sea. Deendayal Port (Kandla) was the first developed after Independence, to ease Mumbai's load after the loss of Karachi at Partition. Ports are remembered by their distinctive superlatives and specialisations.

Airways and Communication
Air travel is the fastest, most comfortable mode and overcomes mountains, deserts, forests and floods, which is why it is preferred in the riverine, forested north-east. UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik), the Regional Connectivity Scheme under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, aims to make flying affordable for common citizens, while Pawanhans serves ONGC and remote terrains. In communication, the Indian postal network is the largest in the world, sorted into first-class (airlifted) and second-class (surface) mail.

- Solid material such as ore mixed with water so that it can be transported through a pipeline.
- Tidal port
- A port whose ship movement depends on the rise and fall of tides, for example Kandla and Kolkata.

- Roadways preceded railways in India, not the other way round.
- The Golden Quadrilateral connects the four metros; the North-South and East-West Corridors are separate components, not part of the quadrilateral loop.
- Mormugao (Goa) is the premier iron-ore export port (~50%); do not confuse it with Vishakhapatnam (deepest landlocked) or Paradwip (also iron ore, Odisha).
- Kandla/Deendayal was the FIRST port after Independence and is tidal; Mumbai is the BIGGEST port, different superlatives.
