Reaching the Age of Adolescence

Adolescence and Puberty

Growth occurs from birth, but around age 10-11 a sudden, noticeable spurt marks the start of adolescence - the phase when the body matures towards reproductive capability. Adolescence runs roughly from 11 to 18-19 years (the 'teens'), so adolescents are called teenagers, and in girls it may begin a year or two earlier than in boys. The changes of this phase mark the onset of puberty, whose defining feature is that boys and girls become capable of reproduction; puberty ends when reproductive maturity is reached.

Changes at Puberty

The most conspicuous change is a sudden increase in height as the long bones of the arms and legs elongate; girls initially grow faster, but both sexes reach maximum height by about 18. Body shape diverges by sex - boys' shoulders broaden and muscles grow prominent, while in girls the region below the waist widens. The voice box (larynx) enlarges, giving boys a deep voice and a visible Adam's apple, increased sweat and sebaceous (oil) gland activity causes acne, and the sex organs mature as testes begin producing sperm and ovaries mature and release eggs.

Secondary Sexual Characters

Features that distinguish males from females but are not the reproductive organs themselves are called secondary sexual characters. In girls the breasts develop (with milk-secreting mammary glands), while boys grow facial hair (moustache, beard) and chest hair; both develop underarm and pubic hair. These characters are produced by the sex hormones secreted by the testes and ovaries.

Hormones and the Endocrine System

Hormones are chemical secretions of endocrine glands, which release them directly into the bloodstream to reach a specific target site - so endocrine glands are called ductless glands, unlike sweat, oil and salivary glands, which use ducts. Testosterone from the testes causes male changes and estrogen from the ovaries causes female changes. Crucially, the sex hormones are controlled by the pituitary gland, the master gland attached to the brain, which also stimulates the thyroid and adrenals and secretes growth hormone.

Reproductive Phase and the Menstrual Cycle

Reproduction becomes possible once the testes and ovaries start producing gametes, and this capacity lasts much longer in males than in females. In females the reproductive phase begins at puberty (about 10-12 years) and lasts to roughly 45-50 years. One ovum matures and is released about once every 28-30 days while the uterine wall thickens to receive a fertilised egg; if fertilisation does not occur, the lining and blood vessels are shed as menstruation. The first menstrual flow is menarche and its cessation at 45-50 years is menopause.

Sex Determination of the Baby

The instruction for a baby's sex lies in the chromosomes inside the nucleus of the fertilised egg (zygote). Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, one pair being the sex chromosomes X and Y: a female is XX and a male is XY. The egg always carries an X, but sperms are of two kinds - X-bearing or Y-bearing - so an X-sperm gives a girl (XX) and a Y-sperm gives a boy (XY). Therefore the father's sperm determines the baby's sex, and blaming the mother is scientifically wrong and unjust.

Other Hormones, Metamorphosis and Reproductive Health

Beyond sex hormones, the thyroid makes thyroxine (deficiency, linked to lack of iodine, causes goitre), the pancreas makes insulin (deficiency causes diabetes), and the adrenals make adrenalin (helps cope with stress) and maintain blood salt balance. Hormones also drive metamorphosis - controlled by thyroxine in frogs (which needs iodine in the water) and by insect hormones in insects. Good reproductive health needs a balanced diet (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins), iron-rich foods to build blood, iodised salt, personal hygiene and exercise, all especially vital during the rapid growth of adolescence.
