How animals continue their species through two modes of reproduction — sexual (fusion of male and female gametes) and asexual (a single parent) — along with fertilisation, embryonic development, and cloning.

Modes of Reproduction

Reproduction ensures the continuation of a species, generation after generation. Like plants, animals reproduce by two modes — sexual reproduction (two parents, with fusion of gametes) and asexual reproduction (a single parent, no gamete fusion). Identifying which mode an animal uses, and the cells/organs involved, is the foundation of the chapter.

  • Sexual reproduction: begins with fusion of male and female gametes (needs two parents).
  • Asexual reproduction: a single parent produces offspring without gamete fusion.
  • Purpose: continuity of similar kinds of individuals across generations.

Reproductive Organs and Gametes

In humans, males and females have distinct reproductive organs that produce gametes. Male organs are a pair of testes, two sperm ducts and a penis; the testes make millions of sperms. Female organs are a pair of ovaries, oviducts (fallopian tubes) and the uterus; an ovary releases one matured egg (ovum) into the oviduct every month.

  • Sperm: a single cell with a head, middle piece and tail (tail helps it swim).
  • Ovum: also a single cell; egg size varies — small in humans, largest is the ostrich egg.
  • Uterus: the organ where the baby develops.

Fertilisation — Internal vs External

Fertilisation is the fusion of a sperm and an ovum; their nuclei fuse into a single nucleus, forming a fertilised egg called the zygote. Because the egg is from the mother and the sperm from the father, the new individual inherits characters from both. Fertilisation inside the female body is internal; outside it (in water) is external.

  • Internal fertilisation: humans, cows, dogs, hens.
  • External fertilisation: frogs, fish, starfish (gametes released in water).
  • Aquatic animals release many eggs/sperms because most are lost to water currents, predators and weather.
  • IVF (in vitro fertilisation): fertilisation outside the body for women with blocked oviducts — gives 'test-tube babies'.

Development — Zygote to Baby

The zygote divides repeatedly to form a ball of cells, which organises into tissues and organs — this developing structure is the embryo. The embryo embeds in the uterine wall and grows body parts; the stage where all body parts are identifiable is the foetus. When foetal development is complete, the mother gives birth.

  • Sequence: zygote -> embryo (embeds in uterus) -> foetus -> baby.
  • In oviparous animals the embryo develops inside the egg covering and then hatches (e.g., hen's chick in about 3 weeks).

Viviparous, Oviparous & Metamorphosis

Animals that give birth to live young are viviparous (humans, cows, dogs); those that lay eggs are oviparous (hen, frog, lizard, butterfly). Crucially, internal fertilisation does not mean live birth — the hen fertilises internally yet lays eggs. After birth or hatching, some young look very different from adults and transform through metamorphosis.

  • Frog life cycle: egg -> tadpole (larva) -> adult; tadpole to frog is metamorphosis.
  • Humans do NOT undergo metamorphosis — adult-like body parts are present from birth.

Asexual Reproduction

Some small and microscopic animals reproduce from a single parent without gametes. In hydra, new individuals arise as outgrowths called buds — this is budding (buds also seen in yeast). In amoeba, the nucleus first divides, then the body splits in two, each part getting a nucleus — this is binary fission.

  • Budding: bulges/buds grow out of the parent body (Hydra).
  • Binary fission: one parent divides into two daughter individuals (Amoeba).

Cloning — The Story of Dolly

Cloning is the production of an exact copy of a cell, a living part, or a whole organism. Dolly the sheep — created by Ian Wilmut and colleagues at the Roslin Institute, Edinburgh — was the first mammal to be cloned. A mammary-gland cell nucleus from a Finn Dorsett sheep was inserted into an enucleated egg of a Scottish blackface ewe (the surrogate), so Dolly was identical to the Finn Dorsett, not to the surrogate.

  • Born 5 July 1996; died 14 February 2003 (a lung disease).
  • Nucleus donor decides identity — Dolly showed no Scottish blackface characters.
  • Cloned mammals often die before or soon after birth, or are born with severe abnormalities.

Traps to avoid

  • Oviparous animals do NOT give birth — they LAY eggs; viviparous animals give birth to young ones.
  • Internal fertilisation is not the same as live birth: the hen fertilises internally but is oviparous (lays eggs).
  • 'Test-tube baby' is a misnomer — only fertilisation (IVF) is outside the body; the baby develops in the uterus.
  • A zygote has ONE nucleus (the sperm and egg nuclei fuse), not two.
  • Asexual reproduction needs NO fertilisation; fertilisation involves gametes and belongs to sexual reproduction only.
  • Do not swap modes: budding = Hydra (and yeast), binary fission = Amoeba; metamorphosis occurs in frogs/insects, NOT in humans.
