India · 1873Phule founds the Satyashodhak Samaj; Pabna agrarian agitation begins

In 1873, organised all-India nationalism had not yet emerged, but anti-caste reform and peasant resistance widened the base of later politics. Jyotirao Phule founded the Satyashodhak Samaj and published Gulamgiri, ryots in Pabna organised against zamindari exactions, and the Bihar famine of 1873–74 tested colonial famine relief.
