Demography and the Birth of Sociology

Demography (Greek demos = people, graphein = describe) is the systematic study of population — its size, growth, age-sex composition and the processes of birth, death and migration. It relies on enumeration through the census or survey. Sociology's rise in late-18th-century Europe was tied to demography, as new nation-states began collecting social statistics for public health, policing, taxation and governance. Aggregate statistics like the death rate showed that social phenomena exist and must be explained at the social level — as in Durkheim's study of suicide rates.

The Census: Counting India

The American census of 1790 was probably the first modern census; Europe adopted the practice in the early 1800s. In India the British conducted censuses during 1867–72, and regular decennial (ten-yearly) censuses have run since 1881; independent India has held seven since 1951, the latest in 2011. The Indian census is the largest such exercise in the world, since China does not conduct regular censuses.

Malthusian Theory of Population Growth

Thomas Robert Malthus, in his Essay on the Principle of Population (1798), pessimistically argued that population grows in geometric progression (2, 4, 8, 16) while food grows only in arithmetic progression (2, 4, 6, 8), so population always outstrips subsistence and humanity is condemned to poverty. He saw 'preventive checks' (delayed marriage, celibacy, abstinence) as weak, making 'positive checks' (famine, disease) nature's inevitable correctives. The theory was refuted by Europe's actual experience — falling birth rates, controlled epidemics and rising food output and living standards.

Theory of Demographic Transition

This theory links population growth to the level of economic development, with every society passing through three stages. Stage 1 (underdeveloped) has low growth because both birth and death rates are high; the transitional Stage 2 sees a 'population explosion' as death rates fall fast through disease control and better nutrition while birth rates lag; Stage 3 (developed) returns to low growth with both rates low. India's transition is incomplete — mortality has fallen but the birth rate has not declined to the same extent.

  • Stage 2 (transitional): death falls fast, birth slow to adjust → very high growth ('explosion').
  • Stage 3: low birth + low death → low net growth.

Common Concepts and Indicators

Most demographic measures are rates or ratios expressed per 1000 (or per 1,00,000) population. Birth rate and death rate are live births and deaths per 1000 population; their difference is the rate of natural increase, which at near-zero means the population has 'stabilised' at replacement level — some countries even show negative growth. Other key measures track fertility, infant and maternal mortality, life expectancy, sex ratio, age structure and dependency.

  • Fertility rate: live births per 1000 women aged 15–49; IMR per 1000 live births; MMR per 1,00,000 live births.
  • Sex ratio: females per 1000 males; natural ratio ~1050, but declining in India due to 'son preference'.
  • Dependency ratio: (population <15 plus >64) Ãˇ population (15–64), as a %; a falling ratio yields the temporary 'demographic dividend'.

Size and Growth of India's Population

India is the second most populous country after China, with 121 crore (1.21 billion) people per the Census of India 2011. Growth was modest during 1901–1951 (annual average never above 1.33%), and 1911–1921 even recorded negative growth (−0.03%) due to the 1918–19 influenza epidemic that killed about 12.5 million people (5% of the population). After Independence growth accelerated, peaking at 2.2% during 1961–1981 before gradually slowing.

Traps to avoid

  • Sex ratio is females per 1000 males (a 'favourable' ratio means more females) — do not invert it to males per females.
  • Fertility rate's base is women aged 15–49, but the birth rate's base is the total population — different denominators.
  • Maternal mortality is per 1,00,000 live births, whereas infant mortality, birth and death rates are per 1,000 — don't mix the bases.
  • 'Positive checks' (famine, disease, war) are nature's brutal correctives, not a desirable thing; only 'preventive checks' are human-controlled.
  • Malthus said population grows geometrically and food arithmetically — aspirants frequently reverse the two progressions.
  • Demographic dividend is temporary — today's large working-age pool eventually becomes tomorrow's elderly dependents.
