What Pollution Is and How It Is Classified
Environmental pollution is the release of substances and energy from the waste products of human activities. The chapter classifies pollution on the basis of the medium through which pollutants are transported and diffused. Although natural sources exist, pollutants from human activity are the real cause of concern.

Water Pollution — India's Most Widespread Problem
Surface water is never pure and becomes polluted once the concentration of suspended, organic and inorganic substances exceeds water's self-purifying capacity. Humans pollute water through industrial, agricultural and cultural activities, with industry the single most significant contributor. The chapter notes that almost all surface water sources in India are contaminated and unfit for human consumption.

Cleaning the Ganga — NMCG and Namami Gange
Ganga pollution causes great concern because the river flows through one of India's most populous regions. Main polluters are industrial waste (e.g., Kanpur), domestic sewage from urban centres and the dumping of carcasses. To restore the river the National Mission for Clean Ganga was set up and the Namami Gange Programme launched.

Air and Noise Pollution
Air pollution is the addition of contaminants (dust, fumes, gases, smoke, vapour) in harmful proportion and duration; the main sources are combustion of fossil fuels, mining and industries. It causes respiratory, nervous and circulatory diseases, urban smog and acid rain. Noise pollution, a recent concern driven by technology, is measured in decibels and is location-specific.
- Air pollutants: oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, hydrocarbons, CO2, CO, lead, asbestos
- Acid-rain clue: pH of the first rain after summer is lower than subsequent rains

Urban Waste Disposal
Rapid, congested urban growth has multiplied solid waste — refuse, garbage and rubbish from (i) household/domestic and (ii) industrial/commercial sources. Metropolitan cities collect and dispose about 90% of solid waste, but most other towns leave 30-50% uncollected, creating serious health hazards. The chapter urges treating waste as a resource for energy and compost.

Rural–Urban Migration
Migration from village to city is driven by high urban labour demand, low rural job opportunities and an unbalanced pattern of rural-urban development. The poor often bypass small and medium cities and move directly to mega cities. The stream is male-dominated because the temporary, transferable, low-wage informal jobs force spouses to stay back in villages.

Problems of Slums
Slums are the underside of unplanned urbanisation — overcrowded, congested settlements with poor sanitation and inadequate services that house the migrant poor. Dharavi in Mumbai is cited as Asia's largest slum, accessible by only one main road and effectively cut off from normal transport. Over time, urban and rural areas have diverged into separate cultural, social, political, economic and technological worlds.
