What Is a Mineral and How Minerals Are Classified

A mineral is a natural substance of organic or inorganic origin with definite chemical and physical properties. On these properties minerals split into metallic (sources of metals) and non-metallic. Metallic minerals are further divided into ferrous (iron-bearing) and non-ferrous, while non-metallics are either organic fossil fuels or inorganic minerals like mica and limestone. India's bulk of valuable minerals are of pre-Palaeozoic age, tied to igneous and metamorphic rocks of Peninsular India.

  • Metallic: ferrous (iron ore, manganese, chromite) vs non-ferrous (copper, bauxite, gold)

Where India's Minerals Lie — The Three Belts

Most metallic minerals occur in the peninsular plateau's old crystalline rocks, and over 97% of coal reserves sit in just four river valleys. Most major minerals lie east of a line linking Mangaluru and Kanpur. Minerals concentrate in three broad belts, supplemented by a Himalayan belt.

  • North-Eastern Plateau (Jharkhand-Chhotanagpur, Odisha, WB, Chhattisgarh): most diversified — iron ore, coal, manganese, bauxite, mica
  • South-Western Plateau (Karnataka, Goa, TN uplands, Kerala): ferrous metals, bauxite, high-grade iron; lacks coal except Neyveli lignite; Kerala has monazite-thorium
  • North-Western (Aravalli-Gujarat, Dharwar rocks): copper, zinc, building stones, gypsum; Gujarat petroleum; salt
  • Himalayan belt: copper, lead, zinc, cobalt, tungsten; oil in Assam valley and Mumbai High

Ferrous Minerals — Iron Ore and Manganese

Ferrous minerals underpin metallurgical industry, and India is well-placed in both reserves and production. India has Asia's largest iron-ore reserve; haematite and magnetite are the two main ores, prized abroad for superior quality, with mines lying close to north-eastern coalfields. Manganese, essential for smelting iron and making ferro-alloys, is mainly associated with the Dharwar system.

Non-Ferrous and Non-Metallic Minerals — Bauxite, Copper, Mica

India is poorly endowed with non-ferrous metallic minerals except bauxite, the ore of aluminium found in tertiary and laterite deposits of the peninsula. Copper, though scarce, is indispensable to the electrical industry, being malleable, ductile and alloyable. Among non-metallics mica is foremost, splitting into tough, flexible sheets used in electrical and electronic industries.

  • Bauxite: Odisha is the largest producer (Kalahandi, Sambalpur); also Lohardaga patlands (Jharkhand), Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, MP
  • Copper: Singhbhum (Jharkhand), Balaghat (MP), Khetri belt — Jhunjhunu and Alwar (Rajasthan)
  • Mica: Jharkhand (Hazaribagh), Andhra-Telangana (Nellore best quality), Rajasthan (Jaipur-Bhilwara belt)
  • India's mica is among the world's best, valued for being tough yet flexible

Conventional Energy — Coal, Petroleum, Natural Gas

Fossil fuels — coal, petroleum, natural gas — plus nuclear minerals form the exhaustible conventional energy sources. Coal occurs in Gondwana (older, bulk) and tertiary ages, and about 80% is bituminous, non-coking, with Jharia the largest field. Petroleum, 'liquid gold', occurs in tertiary sedimentary rocks; systematic exploration began with ONGC in 1956, ending Digboi's monopoly.

Non-Conventional and Nuclear Energy

Renewable sources — solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biomass — are the only sustainable, equitably distributed and eco-friendly energy, cheap once initial cost is met. Nuclear energy uses uranium (from Dharwar rocks and the Singhbhum copper belt) and thorium (from monazite and ilmenite beach sands of the Kerala-Tamil Nadu coast). India's atomic programme matured through the AEC (1948) and the Trombay institute (1954), later renamed BARC (1967).

  • Mumbai High was discovered in 1973 but production began only in 1976 — the two dates differ.
  • Don't mix the dates: AEC 1948, Trombay institute 1954, ONGC 1956, BARC renaming 1967.
  • Uranium comes from Dharwar rocks and the Singhbhum belt; thorium comes from monazite/ilmenite beach sands of Kerala–Tamil Nadu — don't interchange.
