What Secondary Activities Are

Secondary activities add value to natural resources by transforming raw materials into more valuable products — cotton in the boll becomes yarn, iron ore becomes steel. They cover manufacturing, processing and construction (infrastructure) industries. Manufacturing is defined by three common traits: application of power, mass production of identical products, and specialised labour in factory settings producing standardised commodities.

  • Manufacturing literally means 'to make by hand'; today it includes goods 'made by machines'
  • Industry = a geographically located manufacturing unit keeping books of accounts under a management system
  • 'Manufacturing industry' is used for clarity since some secondary activities (entertainment, tourism) are non-factory

Characteristics of Modern Large-Scale Manufacturing

Modern manufacturing rests on specialisation of skills and mass production: each worker repeats one task to make standardised parts cheaply, unlike costly made-to-order craft output. It advances through mechanisation (gadgets doing tasks) to automation (machines working without human thinking), is driven by continuous R&D-led technological innovation, and needs complex organisation, vast capital and executive bureaucracy.

Factors Influencing Industrial Location

Industries maximise profit by minimising cost, so they locate where production costs are lowest. The chapter lists seven factors that operate together — no single factor decides location. Bulky, weight-losing and perishable raw materials pull industry to the source, while market access pulls it toward purchasing power.

Footloose Industries

Footloose industries can be located in a wide variety of places because they do not depend on any specific or weight-losing raw material; they largely rely on component parts obtainable anywhere. They produce in small quantity, employ a small labour force, and are generally non-polluting. Their single most important locational factor is accessibility by road network.

Classification of Manufacturing Industries

Industries are classified on four bases — size, inputs/raw materials, output/products, and ownership. By size they range from household/cottage (local raw material, simple tools, family labour) through small-scale (a workshop outside the home, semi-skilled labour, power-driven machines) to large-scale (mass production, large capital). Large-scale manufacturing developed in the last 200 years in the UK, north-eastern USA and Europe.

  • By inputs: agro-based, mineral-based (ferrous/non-ferrous/non-metallic), chemical-based, forest-based, animal-based
  • By output: basic industries (feed other industries, e.g. iron & steel) vs consumer/non-basic (used directly: biscuits, soap, TV)

High-Technology Industry

High-tech is the latest generation of manufacturing — the application of intensive research and development to make products of advanced scientific and engineering character. Professional white-collar workers greatly outnumber blue-collar production workers, and the landscape is marked by dispersed, low office-plant-lab buildings and planned business parks rather than massive assembly structures.

  • Technopolies = regionally concentrated, self-sustained, highly specialised high-tech industries
