Origin of the Universe and Early Earth

The chapter places life's origin within cosmic evolution. The Big Bang theory explains the universe (about 13.8 billion years old) as a single huge explosion; expansion cooled it, letting Hydrogen and Helium form and condense under gravity into galaxies. Earth formed about 4.5 billion years back in the Milky Way's solar system, initially with no atmosphere, only water vapour, methane, carbon dioxide and ammonia released from the molten mass.

Origin of Life: Chemical Evolution to First Cells

Competing ideas included Panspermia (life as spores arriving from space, favoured by early Greeks and some astronomers) and spontaneous generation (life from decaying matter), which Louis Pasteur disproved by showing life arises only from pre-existing life. Oparin of Russia and Haldane of England proposed chemical evolution, where organic molecules formed from inorganic constituents under early-earth conditions. In 1953 S.L. Miller experimentally produced amino acids by sparking CH4, H2, NH3 and water vapour at 800 degrees C.

Theories of Evolution: Special Creation to Darwin and Wallace

The religious theory of special creation held that all species were created as-is, that diversity is unchanging, and that earth is about 4000 years old, all challenged in the nineteenth century. From his HMS Beagle voyage, Charles Darwin concluded that living forms share similarities with each other and with extinct forms, evolving gradually. His mechanism was natural selection: heritable variations giving better reproductive fitness leave more progeny and are selected by nature. Alfred Wallace independently reached similar conclusions in the Malay Archipelago.

Evidences for Evolution

Multiple independent lines of evidence converge. Paleontological evidence comes from fossils in dated sedimentary rocks, aged by radioactive dating. Comparative anatomy separates homologous organs (same structure, different functions; divergent evolution; common ancestry) from analogous organs (different structure, same function; convergent evolution). Haeckel's embryological argument was disproved by von Baer, while industrial melanism in moths and pesticide and antibiotic resistance show natural selection acting in real time.

Adaptive Radiation

Adaptive radiation is the evolution of many species from a single ancestral stock within a geographical area, radiating into different habitats. Darwin's finches on the Galapagos, diversifying from seed-eating ancestors into insectivorous and vegetarian forms with altered beaks, are the classic example, and Australian marsupials are another. When more than one radiation in an isolated area produces look-alike forms, such as the placental wolf and the Tasmanian marsupial wolf, it reflects convergent evolution.

Mechanism: Natural Selection, Lamarck versus Darwin

Natural selection began once cellular life with differing metabolic capability arose. Because fitness depends on inherited traits, selection has a genetic basis; fast-dividing microbes evolve new variants in days while fish or fowl take millions of years. Branching descent and natural selection are the two key concepts of Darwinism. Lamarck's earlier idea, evolution by use and disuse of organs and inheritance of acquired characters (the giraffe's neck), is no longer accepted.

Traps to avoid

  • Reversing the definitions: homologous is same structure, different function (divergent); analogous is different structure, same function (convergent). Sweet potato (root) and potato (stem) is analogy, not homology.
  • Confusing abiogenesis (first life from non-living molecules, the accepted origin view) with biogenesis (life from pre-existing life, what Pasteur proved for existing organisms).
  • Assuming Pasteur explained the origin of life; he only disproved spontaneous generation and did not show how the first life arose.
  • Treating Haeckel's embryological recapitulation as valid proof; it was proposed but disapproved by Karl Ernst von Baer.
  • Attributing use-and-disuse and the giraffe's neck to Darwin; that is Lamarckism, and it is rejected.
  • Calling marsupial and placental look-alikes adaptive radiation; one ancestor radiating into many forms is radiation, whereas unrelated forms becoming similar is convergent evolution.
