Social Change and Social Order in Rural and Urban Society
It explains what genuinely counts as 'social change', how sociologists classify it, and the five forces — environmental, technological, economic, political and cultural — that drive deep, structural transformation of society.
Social change is the conceptual backbone of GS-I sociology, feeding Mains themes on urbanisation, effects of globalisation, and social empowerment in Indian society. What Qualifies as 'Social Change'
Not every change is social change. Sociologists narrow the term to significant changes that alter the underlying structure of an object or situation over time. To qualify, a change must be both intensive (deep, fundamental impact) and extensive (spread across a large section of society). Sociology itself was born to explain such rapid change in 17th–19th century Western Europe.

Three Ways to Classify Social Change
After defining it, sociologists sort social change three ways — by its pace/speed, by its nature/impact, and most commonly by its sources/causes. Causes are further pre-classified into internal (endogenous) and external (exogenous). This three-fold lens is the chapter's organising spine.

Pace — Evolution vs Revolution
Evolutionary change is slow, gradual change over centuries or millennia through adaptation. Darwin's biological idea of 'survival of the fittest' was later borrowed into society as 'Social Darwinism', stressing adaptive change. Revolutionary change is rapid, even sudden — used mainly in politics for the overthrow of a ruling class (French Revolution, Russian Revolution), but extended loosely to sweeping shifts like the industrial or telecommunications revolution.

Nature — Structural Change vs Change in Values
Structural change transforms society's institutions and the rules running them. The shift from precious-metal coins to paper money — valuable not in itself but because it inspires trust — reorganised banking, credit and finance. Change in ideas and values can be just as powerful: the modern idea of 'childhood' as a protected stage ended acceptance of child labour and produced laws on compulsory schooling.

Nature and ecology shaped early societies — food, dress, livelihood and patterns of interaction. Technology has reduced but not removed this influence, so nature's role is changing rather than simply declining. Environmental factors cause change both destructively (natural disasters, often irreversible) and constructively (resource discovery).

Sources 2 & 3 — Technology and Economy
Technology fused with the market drove the modern era's biggest changes — the Industrial Revolution and the steam engine, which gave continuous power without rest and, via railways and steamships, reshaped trade, migration and social geography. Technology's impact can also be delayed: gunpowder and paper, invented in China, lay dormant until modernising Europe gave them world-changing force. Non-technological economic shifts also matter — plantation agriculture spurred slavery; WTO tariff changes can wipe out whole industries.

Political forces, especially warfare, are among the most powerful causes of change; conquest usually brings immediate social change, and sometimes the conquered transform the conquerors. The modern case is post-WWII Japan: after the nuclear bombing and surrender, US occupation drove changes including land reform — yet by the 1970s Japan was outpacing its teacher. Kings and queens were really representatives of larger trends, not lone movers; culture completes the five sources.

- Treating ALL change as 'social change' — it must be both intensive AND extensive; minor or local changes don't qualify.
- Assuming 'revolution' is only political — it is also used loosely for industrial/telecom revolutions; evolution = slow, revolution = sudden.
- Mixing up endogenous (internal) and exogenous (external) causes.
- Saying environment's influence on society is simply 'declining' — the chapter says it is changing, not just declining.
- Crediting kings/queens as the prime movers of history — they were representatives of larger political-economic-social trends.
