Industrialisation: Myth versus Reality
The chapter opens with celebratory images — the 'angel of progress' on the 'Dawn of the Century' and the 'Two Magicians' (Aladdin vs the modern mechanic) — that equate industrialisation with machines, factories and unstoppable progress. The historian's job is to question this triumphalist story. In reality industrialisation was slow, uneven and tied to hand labour, and in colonies like India it was shaped by colonial domination rather than free technological advance.

Proto-industrialisation: Industry Before the Factory
Even before factories dotted the landscape, large-scale production for an international market existed in the European countryside — historians call this proto-industrialisation. As world trade and colonies expanded, town merchants moved to villages because powerful urban guilds blocked new producers, while enclosure of the commons pushed poor peasants to accept merchant advances. This built a decentralised 'putting-out' network closely linking town merchants and rural producers.

The earliest English factories appeared by the 1730s but multiplied only in the late eighteenth century, with cotton as the first symbol of the new era. A cluster of inventions in carding, spinning and rolling raised output per worker, and Richard Arkwright's cotton mill brought costly machines and all processes under one roof. This allowed close supervision, quality control and labour regulation impossible in scattered village production.

The Pace of Change: Slow, Uneven, Hand-driven
Industrialisation was far slower and patchier than the 'progress' story claims. Cotton led only until the 1840s, after which iron and steel surged with railway expansion, yet new sectors never simply wiped out traditional ones. Technology spread cautiously because machines were costly, broke down and underperformed — so the typical mid-nineteenth-century worker remained a craftsperson, not a machine operator.

In Victorian Britain abundant migrant labour kept wages low, so industrialists saw little reason to invest heavily in labour-saving machines. Seasonal industries (gas works, breweries, book-binding, ship repair) preferred to hire hands for peak demand, and the market often wanted varied, intricate, handmade goods rather than standardised machine output. By contrast, labour-scarce America pushed mechanisation — while handmade goods symbolised refinement for Britain's elite and machine goods were exported to the colonies.

Colonial India: Decline of Textiles and the Weavers
Before machine industry, India dominated the world textile trade through ports like Surat, Masulipatam and Hooghly, financed by Indian merchants, bankers and supply merchants. As European companies seized monopoly control of trade, the old ports decayed and colonial Bombay and Calcutta rose. Weavers were then crushed by a double blow — collapsing export markets and a home market flooded with cheap Manchester imports — a process broadly termed deindustrialisation.

The First World War was the turning point — Manchester imports fell, handing Indian mills a booming home market — while swadeshi-era advertising wrapped Indian goods in nationalist and divine imagery.
