Human Resources: People as a Nation's Greatest Resource

People as the Ultimate Resource

Nature's bounty becomes a resource only when people find it useful; it is human demands and abilities that convert raw nature into usable resources, making human resource the ultimate resource. Healthy, educated and motivated people develop resources as per their needs. Like all resources, human resources are unevenly distributed and differ in education, age and sex, and their numbers and characteristics keep changing.

  • Resource creation hinges on human skill, technology and demand — not nature by itself.
  • India's edge: a young, skilled, hopeful workforce that must be educated and given skills and opportunity.

Distribution of Population

Population distribution is the pattern in which people are spread across the earth's surface, and it is extremely uneven — more than 90% of people live on about 30% of the land. Crowded belts are South and South-East Asia, Europe and north-eastern North America; sparse zones are high latitudes, tropical deserts, high mountains and equatorial forests. More people live north of the Equator, and almost three-quarters live in just two continents, Asia and Africa.

  • Distribution = where people are spread; do not confuse it with density or change.

Density of Population

Population density is the number of people living per unit area, normally expressed as persons per square km. The world average is 51 persons/sq km, with South Central Asia having the highest density, followed by East and South-East Asia; India's average is 382 persons/sq km. Density measures crowding, but how crowded a country is has little to do with its level of economic development.

  • Density does not equal development: Bangladesh and Japan are both densely populated, yet Japan is far more developed.

Factors Affecting Distribution

Population concentrates where survival and livelihood are easy, repelled from harsh terrain and climates. Geographical factors are topography, climate, soil, water and minerals; social, cultural and economic factors add the human pull of amenities, faith and jobs.

  • Geographical pull: plains, fertile soils and fresh water (Ganga, Brahmaputra, Nile, Hwang-He, Chang Jiang); push: mountains (Himalayas, Alps, Andes), deserts (Sahara) and polar regions.
  • Minerals draw settlement — South Africa's diamond mines and Middle East oil.
  • Social (Pune — housing/health/education), Cultural (Varanasi, Jerusalem, Vatican City), Economic (Mumbai, Osaka).

Population Change

Population change is the change in the number of people over a period, driven by births, deaths and migration. Until the 1800s growth was slow as high births were offset by high deaths from poor health and food; thereafter better food supplies and medicine cut death rates while birth rates stayed high, causing rapid growth. The natural growth rate is birth rate minus death rate, and migration adds or removes people on top of this natural change.

  • Birth rate = live births per 1,000; death rate = deaths per 1,000; natural growth rate = their difference.
  • Emigrants leave (Sudan); immigrants arrive (USA, Australia); the general flow runs less-developed → more-developed nations, and rural → urban within countries.
  • High-growth Kenya (high birth, falling death) contrasts with slow-growth UK (low birth, low death).

Population Composition and Pyramids

Population composition is the structure of population by age, sex, literacy, health, occupation and income. It is read through a population pyramid (age-sex pyramid): the base shows children below 15 (young dependents) reflecting births, the apex shows the aged above 65 (elderly dependents) reflecting deaths, and the middle is the economically active working age. The pyramid's shape narrates a country's demographic story.

  • Kenya: broad base narrowing rapidly — both high birth and high death rates.
  • India: broad young base from falling death rates — a strong, expanding labour force (demographic dividend).
  • Japan: narrow base from low birth rates with a wide top — an ageing society.
