Agriculture is studied as a primary economic activity organised like a system (inputs–processes–outputs), classified into subsistence and commercial farming, mapped to the world's major crops, and contrasted between developing (India) and developed (USA) farming.
Agriculture is a Prelims goldmine for crop–climate–soil matching, leading-producer pairs, types of farming and the primary/secondary/tertiary classification. For Mains it anchors GS-III themes — cropping patterns, food security, farm mechanisation, and the storage–marketing weaknesses of Indian agriculture — while its world-distribution and economic-activity content also feeds GS-I economic geography.

Agriculture as a Primary Activity & the Three Sectors
The chapter classifies every economic activity into three linked stages: primary (extraction/production of natural resources), secondary (processing them) and tertiary (services that support both). Agriculture is the classic primary activity — growing crops, fruits, vegetables, flowers and rearing livestock — and its produce feeds secondary industries (flour to bread/biscuits) and tertiary services (mandi, transport, banking). Its scale is huge: about 50% of the world's people and nearly two-thirds of India's population depend on it. The word comes from Latin ager/agri (soil) + cultura (cultivation).
- Primary: extraction/production — agriculture, fishing, gathering.
- Secondary: processing — steel-making, baking bread, weaving cloth.
- Tertiary: services — transport, trade, banking, insurance, advertising.
- Arable land = the land on which crops are grown.
Farming as a System (Inputs–Processes–Outputs)
NCERT teaches agriculture as a system so it can be analysed like any production process. Inputs split into physical inputs (rainfall, temperature, sunshine, soil, slope) and human inputs (seeds, fertilisers, machinery, labour). These pass through operations and yield outputs that are consumed or sold; favourable topography, soil and climate remain vital throughout.
- Inputs: seeds, fertilisers, machinery, labour (plus physical: soil, climate, slope).
- Processes: ploughing, sowing, irrigation, weeding, harvesting.
- Outputs: crops, wool, dairy and poultry products.
- Physical inputs are nature-given; human inputs are farmer-supplied.
Subsistence Farming
Farming is classified by geography, demand, labour and technology into subsistence and commercial types. Subsistence farming feeds the farmer's own family using low technology and household labour on small output. It sub-divides into intensive subsistence (small plots, simple tools, lots of labour, often multiple crops a year, rice dominant in monsoon Asia) and primitive subsistence, which covers shifting cultivation and nomadic herding.
- Intensive subsistence: small plot, more labour, rice main crop; south/southeast/east Asia monsoon belt.
- Shifting cultivation ('slash and burn'): clear–burn–cultivate–abandon; Amazon, tropical Africa, SE Asia, NE India.

Commercial Farming
In commercial farming crops and animals are produced for market sale on large areas with heavy capital and mostly machine labour. It takes three forms — commercial grain farming, mixed farming and plantation agriculture. Grain farming (wheat, maize) dominates the sparsely populated temperate grasslands of North America, Europe and Asia, where severe winters allow only a single crop.
- Commercial grain farming: large temperate-grassland farms, single crop (wheat/maize).
- Mixed farming: food + fodder crops with livestock; Europe, E-USA, Argentina, SE Australia, NZ, S. Africa.

Major Crops & Their Geography
The chapter pairs each crop with its required climate/soil and leading producers — a favourite Prelims matching ground. Food crops are wheat, rice, maize and millets; jute and cotton are fibre crops; tea and coffee are beverage crops. Notice the recurring soil-climate logic: water-retaining alluvial clay for rice, well-drained loam for wheat/coffee, black soil for cotton.

Agricultural Development & Food Security
Agricultural development means raising farm output to feed a growing population — by expanding cropped area, growing more crops, improving irrigation, and using fertilisers, high-yielding-variety (HYV) seeds and mechanisation. Its ultimate aim is food security: when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food. In India this HYV + fertiliser + irrigation package drove the Green Revolution, and food security is now backed by the National Food Security Act, 2013.
- Levers: more cropped area, more crops/year, irrigation, fertilisers, HYV seeds, mechanisation.
- Aim = food security (NCERT/FAO-style definition).
- Organic farming: organic manure + natural pesticides, no genetic modification — a sustainable alternative.

Two Farms — India (Munna Lal) vs USA (Joe Horan)
The two case studies crystallise the developing-vs-developed contrast. Munna Lal (Adilabad, Ghazipur, UP) farms about 1.5 hectares, grows two crops (wheat/rice + pulses), rents tractor and tubewell, leans on cooperatives for credit, fodder advice and milk sale, and suffers poor storage that forces distress sales in the mandi. Joe Horan (Iowa, USA) owns about 300 hectares (US average about 250 ha), uses soil-testing labs, satellite-linked computers, combine harvesters and threshers, and 'works like a businessman, not a peasant'.

Traps to avoid
- Horticulture = fruits + vegetables + flowers (commercial); don't equate it with floriculture (only flowers) or viticulture (only grapes).
- 'Golden Fibre' is Jute, not cotton or tea — a direct NCERT MCQ trap.
- Rice's leading producer is China, not India; India is second.
- Intensive subsistence uses MORE labour on a SMALL plot for the family; 'intensive' does not mean large-scale or commercial.
- Shifting cultivation and nomadic herding are primitive SUBSISTENCE, not commercial; plantation (single cash crop) is COMMERCIAL.
