A resource is anything useful and valuable that satisfies a human need, and this chapter explains how resources are created, how they are classified into natural, human-made and human, and how they must be conserved through sustainable development.

What Makes Something a Resource? Utility and Value
A resource is anything that can be used to satisfy a human need. An object becomes a resource only when it has two qualities — utility (usability) and value (worth) — and its use is precisely what gives it value. Water, electricity, a rickshaw, a textbook and vegetables are all resources because they are used by people.
- Utility/usability is what makes an object or substance a resource.
- Value means worth; use or utility gives a resource its value.
- Some resources have economic value (metals); some do not (a beautiful landscape) — yet both satisfy needs.
- Resources can gain economic value over time, e.g., a grandmother's home remedies if patented and sold.
How Substances Become Resources: People, Time and Technology
Substances become resources only when humans assign them value through use. Time and technology are the two key factors that convert ordinary substances into resources, and both are tied to the needs of people. People are themselves the most important resource because their ideas, knowledge and inventions keep creating more resources.
- Discovery of fire led to cooking and other processes.
- Invention of the wheel led to newer modes of transport.
- Technology turned the energy of fast-flowing water into hydroelectricity.
- Iron ore became a resource only after people learnt to extract iron from it.
Three Types of Resources: Natural, Human-made, Human
Resources are generally classified into natural, human-made and human. Natural resources are drawn from nature and used with little modification; human-made resources are created by transforming natural materials; human resources are people themselves, whose skills convert physical material into valuable resources.
- Natural: air, water, soils, minerals — many are free gifts of nature.
- Human-made: buildings, bridges, roads, machinery, vehicles — and technology is also a human-made resource.
- Human: people whose knowledge, skill and technology create more resources.
Natural Resources: Renewable vs Non-renewable
Natural resources are broadly categorised into renewable and non-renewable. Renewable resources get renewed or replenished quickly — some, like solar and wind, are virtually unlimited and unaffected by human activity, but others like water, soil and forest can be depleted by careless use. Non-renewable resources have a limited stock and may take thousands of years to replenish, far beyond human life spans.
- Renewable: solar and wind (unlimited); water, soil, forest (can be over-used and reduced).
- Non-renewable: coal, petroleum and natural gas.
- Stock of resource = the amount of a resource available for use.
Unequal Distribution of Resources
Natural resources are distributed unequally over the earth. Their distribution depends on physical factors such as terrain, climate and altitude, and because these factors differ so much across the earth's surface, resources are not found evenly everywhere.

Human Resources and Human Resource Development
People are a special resource because only they possess the knowledge, skill and technology to make the best use of nature and create more resources. Education and health are what make people a valuable resource. Improving the quality of people's skills so they can create more resources is called human resource development.
- Human resource = the number (quantity) and abilities (mental and physical) of people.
- Education and health convert people into a valuable resource.
- HRD = improving skills so people can create more resources.
Conservation and Sustainable Development
If used carelessly, even renewable resources can become scarce and non-renewable ones can be exhausted. Using resources carefully and giving them time to get renewed is resource conservation, while balancing present use with conservation for the future is sustainable development. Every individual can contribute by reducing consumption, recycling and reusing — because all our lives are linked.
- Conservation = careful use of resources plus time to get renewed.

- Duties: keep renewable-resource use sustainable, conserve the diversity of life, and minimise damage to the natural environment.

Traps to avoid
- Mere abundance does NOT make something a resource — only utility AND value do; in the NCERT MCQ, 'quantity' is the wrong option.
- Technology is a HUMAN-MADE resource, not a natural one — easy to misclassify.
- All renewables are NOT inexhaustible: water, soil and forests are renewable yet can be depleted by overuse; only solar and wind are practically unlimited.
- Renewable does not mean 'never affected by humans' — careless use can shrink the stock of renewable resources.
- Conservation is not the same as sustainable development: conservation is careful use plus renewal time, while sustainable development balances present use with future needs.
- 'Free gift of nature' does not mean no technology is needed — some natural resources still require tools or technology to be used well.
