From Foraging to Farming: Crops and Cropping Seasons
Until about 10,000 BCE humans were nomadic gatherers and hunters; settled agriculture was born when they learnt to cultivate land and grow rice, wheat and other food crops. A crop is plants of the same kind grown on a large scale at one place. India's varied climate (temperature, humidity, rainfall) yields a rich diversity of crops, but two broad cropping patterns dominate, with a third summer season.

The Seven Agricultural Practices and Soil Preparation
Cultivation follows a fixed sequence of seven practices. The first, preparation of soil, means tilling or ploughing to loosen and turn the soil so roots penetrate deep and breathe, earthworms and microbes thrive and add humus, and the thin nutrient-rich top layer is refreshed. Tools used are the plough, hoe and cultivator; clumps (crumbs) are broken and the field is levelled for easy sowing and irrigation.

Sowing and Seed Selection
Good-quality, clean, healthy, high-yielding seeds are selected before sowing. Damaged seeds are hollow and lighter, so they float in water and are discarded — a simple selection test. Adequate spacing prevents overcrowding so each plant gets enough sunlight, water and nutrients; sowing uses a traditional funnel tool or a tractor-drawn seed drill.

Replenishing the Soil: Manure, Fertilisers and Rotation
Continuous cropping without leaving land fallow drains soil nutrients, so manure and fertilisers are added. Manure is an organic substance from decomposed plant/animal waste that adds humus, porosity and water-holding capacity but is nutrient-poor; fertilisers are factory-made inorganic chemicals rich in N, P and K that raise yields but, in excess, degrade soil and pollute water. Crop rotation with legumes restores nitrogen naturally via Rhizobium bacteria.

Irrigation: Sources, Traditional and Modern Methods
Irrigation is the supply of water to crops at regular intervals; its frequency varies with crop, soil and season, and is higher in summer due to greater evaporation. Plants are nearly 90% water and seeds will not germinate in dry conditions. Traditional lifting devices are cheap but inefficient, while modern drip and sprinkler systems use water economically.
- Sources: wells, tubewells, ponds, lakes, rivers, dams and canals.
- Traditional methods: moat (pulley), chain pump, dhekli and rahat (lever) — cattle/human powered.
- Sprinkler: rotating nozzles, ideal for uneven land, lawns and coffee plantations.
- Drip: water falls drop-by-drop at the roots, wastes nothing, a boon in water-scarce regions.
Weeding, Harvesting and Storage
Weeds are undesirable plants growing with the crop, competing for water, nutrients, space and light, and are removed by tilling, manual khurpi, seed drill, or weedicides like 2,4-D (sprayed before weeds flower or seed; handled with face covered). A mature crop — cereals take 3 to 4 months — is harvested by sickle or harvester, then grain is separated from chaff by threshing. A 'combine' does both jobs, after which produce must be dried and stored against moisture and pests.

Traps to avoid
- Kharif vs Rabi: Kharif is monsoon-sown (June-September, e.g., paddy, cotton); Rabi is winter-grown (October-March, e.g., wheat) — aspirants swap the seasons or crops.
- Manure is NOT a fertiliser: manure is organic/natural/humus-rich but nutrient-poor, while fertiliser is inorganic/factory-made/nutrient-rich but adds no humus.
- Rhizobium is a bacterium living only in root nodules of leguminous plants — the bacterium fixes nitrogen, not the plant, and it is not present in all crops.
- A 'combine' performs BOTH harvesting and threshing — it is not a stand-alone harvester or thresher.
- 2,4-D is a weedicide (kills weeds), not an insecticide, pesticide or fertiliser.
- Paddy is a Kharif crop because it needs abundant water — it cannot be grown in dry winter, so never list it under Rabi.
